Swing For Education
On September 30th, over 100 tennis players and golfers gathered for a day filled with fun, fellowship and fundraising for the inaugural Swing For Education Golf & Tennis Classic to provide scholarships for students with a variety of needs in Baltimore County Public Schools. The rally was hosted by Woodholme Country Club and presented by The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools, Baltimore Tennis Patrons and the Maryland Association of Nonpublic Special Education Facilities (MANSEF). Pam Shriver served as the Honorary Chair.

Lynn Morrell, acting as the organizer and tournament director on behalf of BTP, fielded a team of 8 local tennis experts to lead a “Swing For Education” interactive panel discussion, on-court tennis clinic and a pro/am round robin doubles tournament. Morrell said “The panel discussion was fantastic! Chock full of content on a variety of subjects that both a seasoned player and a newbie could apply and relate to instantly!” The experts covered, “How To Raise Your NTRP rating (Debby Broadus, USTA MD.); Overcoming Fear of Failure (Alicia von Lossberg, USTA MD.); My Top 5‘s For Junior Tennis (Barbara Linke, USTA MD) An Inspirational Story (Brenda Gilmore, Prince George’s Tennis & Education Foundation); Poaching Secrets & Volley Footwork (Louise Gengler Thomas, Tennis Center at College Park); How to Find Your Ideal Tennis Partner (Peggy Machoian, Athletic Performance Institute); How To Make Your Practices Improve Your Play (Lynn Taylor, Bare Hills Racquet & Fitness); A Formula For Warm-Ups That Works (Bronwyn Williams, Athletic Performance Institute).

All the players games were lifted by the pros on-court tips and quick fixes, but only 4 would finish the day with trophies in hand: Barbara Burnopp (1st), Diane Carroll (2nd) Val Perdomo (co 3rd), and Jackie Shuger (co 3rd).

The day was topped off with a keepsake memento. Everyone received a copy of “ The Tennis Player From Bermuda” which is rated as “one of four must-read books of the year” by Style Substance and Soul. The books were donated by local author, Jim Miller. Dunlop Sports, Allogram, Inc. and Len Garon also provided in-kind donations.

“All in all, you couldn’t ask for a better day and way to celebrate our children with this Swing For Education”
